Introduction简介
In recent years rapid technological and informational changes, industrial restructuring and integration have been radically realigning production structures and fostering an unprecedented drive toward the globalisation of the world economy. World trade has expanded at twice the rate of output and national governments have slowly but decidedly given up their protectionist policies to engage in the new global markets. In this context, local and regional economies increasingly need new responses and demand specialist skills to exploit the opportunities these changes offer.
Aims and objectives of the programme主旨
The MSc in Local Economic Development establishes both the conceptual base and the analytical skills that are needed to harness local and regional economic change and help develop the capacity of institutions as agents of development. Its key concern is with the variety of ways in which national and regional governments and local agencies may be mobilised, managed and co-ordinated with the private sector in order to stimulate local economies. Students will also develop an understanding of the local, national and international trends in business organisation, and a knowledge of the variety of agents that constitute the governance of local and regional economies. The course emphasises management techniques of local capacity building, attracting investment, network building, project development, focusing also on the rationale and impact of regional and local development policies and on the role of institutions.
The one-year programme draws upon the expertise of a group of LSE researchers who are key contributors to research on local and regional economic development. In addition there are regular contributions from the world of practice.
